The Island Where America Began
The Latin American country of the Dominican Republic is located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the chain of islands called Great Antilles. The island is located to the west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. It is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea on its Southern coast and the Atlantic Ocean on its Northern coast.
The terrain is characterized by golden sand beaches which coexist with mountains. The resorts in Dominican Republic offer a wide array of recreational activities such as white water rafting, mountain biking, diving, and wind surfing. Luxurious resorts also exist around the port town of Puerta Plata and the relatively virgin area of the Samana Peninsula.
The level of crime in the cities such as Santo Domingo is still a matter of concern.
